16th November
West Bowling 32 KXP 16
Playing against a well organised and skillful Bowling side, King Cross put in their best performance of the season by far.
Cameron Thurlow was outstanding, especially in defence. There was an introduction into rugby league for Tom Wood who's running and tackling was superb and we hope that he continues to play for us. Adam Taylor and Jack Yarker organised the team well and seem to be gelling. Thomas Metcalf and Jonny Binns ran the defensive line really well, William Oakes took the man of the match award with his dynamic running. Mackenzie Bradwell was as usual his busy little self, while Jamie Hallowell made some crunching tackles once he had got hurt. Dylan Hartley-Poulton proved dificult to stop once he got running and our new recruits, Joe and Chris look to be gaining in confidence which bodes well for the rest of the season.
26th October
King Cross Park 58 Elland 0
On a muddy Sunday morning, King Cross had a confidence boosting victory against the newly formed Elland side who also gave a good account of themselves.
As a team, every player played to the top of their game which was the most encouraging thing to take from the game. Adam Taylor organised the attack with some nicely timed passing to set up a couple of tries and he also went over for a really good try of his own. Jack Yarker was outstanding both in attack and defence and was desperately unluckly not to come away with a score having gone so close on three occasions. Jonny Binns had his usual consistant game, leading the defensive line and also running confidently with the ball which resulted in a good try being scored. Thomas Metcalfe got the man of the match award for his tireless tackling and powerful running. Jamie Hallowells tackling gets better week by week and he also made a few telling breaks as well. Cameron Thurlow's elusive running always causes problems and today was rewarded with two well taken tries. William Oakes today upped his defensive work and his running with the ball was as good as ever as he scored four tries, three of which were almost the length of the field. Mackenzie Bradwell, playing a year up was absolutely superb in every department. His tackling was first class and he went over for an astonishing six tries. And finally our new boy Chris who is just getting to grips with the game ran the ball in well making some good yards and looks to be growing in confidence.
This should give the boys a stepping stone to play better rugby against more experienced teams in weeks to come. GOOD WORK.
21st September King Cross Park 24 Queensbury 30
On our first home game of the season and on a lovely sunny morning with only eight players, the heat was sure to take its toll against Queensbury who turned up with twelve.
King Cross started out in really determined mood with Jack Yarker to the fore with some superb tackling, keeping Queensbury out. Some fine attacking play by Cross with the ball passing through several pairs of hands saw Connor Pollard storm over for a well taken try. Cross then defended with great determination, having to do three sets of six on the bounce before Bury finally got over the tryline to level the scores. Some enterprising play from Cameron Thurlow almost resulted in a fine try but had the ball knocked out over the line. King Cross were growing in confidence now and Adam Taylor was passing the ball around in good style and this time it was William Oakes who crossed the line, only for the ball again to be knocked out. Jamie Hallowell and Thomas Metcalfe kept the tryline intact and Oakes finally crossed to put Cross back in front. Cross started to tire now and although there was plenty of effort from the likes Jonny Binns and Yarker, Bury scored two tries in quick succession to go in at half time leading 14 – 12.
The second half started very much like the first with Cross showing some good skills and it came as no surprise to see Pollard get the first score of the half to put Cross back in front. Cross were now attacking with great confidence and had they looked for a final pass on a couple of occasions the lead would have been extended by quite a few points. However this was not the case and were made to work hard for the next try which was finished off by Pollard. It was now that the fresh legs of Queensbury started to pay off as Cross tired very quickly with Bury going in for three unanswered tries. Cross did finish on the up with a well taken try from Oakes straight from a scrum to get the final score of the game.
