Sunday 15th November
King Cross Park 6 West Bowling 34
This week King Cross came up against a well organised West Bowling team who showed them how to play rugby and if anything at all is to come out of this match, then let us hope the lads did actually learn a few things from their opposition.
The first half passed without Cross troubling the scoreboard and at 20-0 at half time all Cross could play for in the second half was pride.
They did improve in the second half but due to too many missed tackles they went on to lose the game 34 points to 6, a score that would have been a lot worse if West Bowling had a better kicking day as they only converted one kick out of the eight tries they scored.
The King Cross points came late on in the second half when Tom Wood managed to cross the line for a try which was converted by Jabinder Binns.
Looking for positives from the game, then you would have to say that on the tackling front Tom Metcalfe, Tom Wood and Max Spolverato stood out today but they needed more help from their team mates than they got. Whilst on the attacking front, again Tom Wood, William Oakes and Jabinder Binns ran well, only to find that they also, were not being backed up by their team mates.
As rugby is a team game then the lads need to get together and help each other out if they are to go forward or they will have problems in all their future games.

King Cross Park 24
Slaithwaite 26
On a miserable rainy Sunday morning King Cross, minus quite a few players, put in a first half display that showed promise and spirit. And even though they were behind at half time, the display suggested that they had a chance against a Slaithwaite team that they always lose to. Slaithwaite opened the scoring and were 8-0 up before King Cross scored with William Oakes running from deep to score his first try of the game which he converted, then Slaithwaite added another, only for Oakes to reply with his second of the game which was converted by Johnny Binns. Good defending by all the King Cross team, especially from Tom Metcalfe, Jack Yarker and Johnny Binns kept the half time score to 14 – 12 to Slaithwaite, this could been different had the referee not ruled Johnny Binns off side from a Slaithwaite knock on when we all thought he had scored.
Unfortunately this was a game of two halves and King Cross decided not show up for the second half, missed tackles and the inability to carry the ball for six tackles was the downfall of the team, they let Slaithwaite run in 5 second half tries to end up losing the game 36 – 24.
The highlights of a poor second half came from William Oakes adding two more tries after some good inter play with Johnny Binns, both of which were converted, one by Tom wood and the other by Tom Metcalfe. Also in defence Tom Metcalfe put in an excellent tackling display and Dylan Hartley-Poulton also stepped up with some impressive tackling and chasing.
Once again, over half of the King Cross team can expect training to be on their defence which, when they get it right will show that they are going to be able to match and beat any team they come up against.
