Game 25

Sunday 9th May

WR Premier League Grand Final

Siddal v King Cross Park

Siddal 18 King Cross Park 26

King Cross Park U 14's finished their season with a well deserved victory over local team Siddal in the grand final of the West Riding Premier division. The two teams had met four times already this season with Siddal winning two League games and Park winning in the cup competitions. Both teams showing much improvement during the season and both finishing the league at the top of the table. Now it was down to this final game to see who were the worthy title holders.
Park started well and were close to scoring, only for Siddal to defend well and it was the blues who turned defence into attack and with Park giving away an early penalty Siddal gained easy ground to allow Sam Williams to go over for the first try of the game, Harry Craze slotted over the extra two points.
Park hit back, an early substitution was made and Shohiab Mahmood came onto the field. The ball was passed left to right and then back to middle Josh MacDonald calling the moves and hitting Mahmood with a flat pass, Mahmood running a good line was never going to be stopped and went over the line, a fine kick from Ryan Sweeney brought the score to six apiece.
Theo Tooth was the next to go over for Park. After his fellow team mates made good ground with some good handling, Siddal were now under pressure close to their line. Their defence lost its shape and a gap opened up for Tooth to exploit the invitation to score. Again Sweeney slotted over the extras with ease.
Just before the break the blues hit back With Siddals man of the match Zach McComb weaving his way over and Craze making the score level at half time.
Siddal continued to pile on the pressure with strong runs by their forwards, Park held firm. James Gill tackling strong with Tyler Balmforth putting in some solid hits, Parks Man of the Match Jacob Farrel topped the tackle count and also made some strong runs as did hard working Isaac Pollard which allowed the team to put Siddal on the back foot. Second rower Daniel Hoyle, having an excellent game, was the next to score again at close range, MacDonald sucking in the defenders allowing Hoyle to barge through onto a short pass and diving over left of the post giving Sweeney another easy conversion, his tally three from three.
Parked restarted the game with a deep kick but failed to defend against a strong run by prop Louis Hobbs who made it all the way back to the halfway. With more good runs Park found themselves on their own line, McCombe again causing problems and setting Williams up for his second and again Craze putting the score level.
Parks' Captain Luke Stocks needed to pick his troops up and get them back in front, and this he did with a good individual effort. Forcing his way over 10 metres in from the touch. Unfortunatley the conversion was blown the wrong side of the near upright.
The next kick and chase needed to be better than the previous to keep the pressure on Siddal, Sweeney worked his magic and forced the kick to bounce into touch. Park quickly passed the ball from the scrum down the line. Richard Partington brought it back to the middle pulling the defence in leaving space out wide, Ben Hildred came into the line well but was brought down just short of the line, Daniel Cockroft switched the pass to the blind side to Mahmood who quickly ran around the sliding defence to score the final winning try. Sweeney's Fantastic attempt at goal from the touch again just brushed the wrong side of the posts, but the celebrations had already begun and King Cross Park U14's lifted their third trophy of the season after winning the Halifax cup, the West Riding Challenge Cup and now the Premier League Champions Cup.

HALIFAX CUP FINAL:
KING CROSS PARK U/14's versus SIDDAL U/14's.
KXP 40 - Siddal 16
King Cross Park were in their second final in as many weeks on sunday against local rivals Siddal. Both teams were competing for the Halfax "Kevin Banham" cup. The game was hosted by Brighouse Rangers and played in front of an energetic crowd.
Cross got off to an excellent start, Aron Manger finding touch from the kick off. The scrum was formed and the ball was driven towards the posts, a quick play the ball lead to fast hands allowing Manger to force his way over for the first try. Josh MacDonald took over the kicking duties and made the score 6-0 in just two minutes.
Park continued to pile on the pressure and after good go forward work by Shohaib Mahmood and Luke Stocks, Jacob Farrell found a gap and ran in the next try, MacDonald again added the conversion. Siddal then replied with a try in the corner but couldn't add the extras. Park's Richard Partington then showed a clean pair of heels after a well timed pass from MacDonald, Partington running onto the ball at pace to score the last points of the first half, MacDonald missing with his only failure of the game.
The second half started as well as the first half for Park when MacDonald created space for himself to sprint from half way and over the line, adding ther conversion himself. Ben Hildred worked well at scrum half as did Daniel Cockroft who both showed great delivery to their forwards, allowing Daniel Hoyle who's worked hard throughout the game to go over for Park's fifth try, MacDonald was again successful. Siddal never gave in and showed some great determination putting Park under some pressure by using their big forwards to barge over for two more tries this time they added just one conversion. Park dug deep to keep their opposition at bay, Matthew Kennedy with a copy book tackle at full back. Isaac Pollard once again topped the tackle count and Theo Tooth came off the bench to make a big impact, but it was man of the match Aron Manger who broke the hearts of Siddal. A Siddal mistake from a scrum was picked up by Manger who swept away to score under the posts, MacDonald slotted over the easy two points. Again, Siddal came up with an error in Park's half and Pollard gave a quick pass from the scrum, MacDonald showed the ball as Partington ran an inside line which opened up a gap for Manger to receive the pass and sprint home for his hat-trick, MacDonald added the conversion despite pressure from some of the Siddal supporters for the final points of the game, leaving Park to travel home with more silverware.

West Riding Challenge Cup Final

King Cross Park 14 - West Bowling 10

It was King Cross Park U14's big day out on Sunday. They travelled over to Emley Moor Welfare ground to compete in the West Riding Challenge Cup final against West Bowling.
Bowling started the game stronger and took the lead within their second set, with a try close to the posts, the conversion was kicked. The game was a battle from end to end with both sides defending their line well. Park really should have been 2 tries in front, but forced errors prevented them from scoring, which left the half time score at 6 points to nil in Bowlings favour.
Park needed to step up their game in the second half. Shohaib Mahmood, Luke Stocks and Daniel Hoyle all made vital runs up field. Daniel Cockroft picked up a loose ball and darted down the blind side. After a quick play the ball Isaac Pollard powered his way over in their corner. Ryan Sweeney produced a sensational kick from the touch line. Park were now in the game. Again Park applied the pressure on the Bradford side and soon scored again. Bowling had kicked over for Josh MacDonald to receive the ball and offload to Aron Manger who burst through their line of defence, he had the fullback to beat and the cover defence were closing down on him. Manger kept his cool and looked for support. Mahmood did well to keep up with him. The pass was made and Mahmood sprinted and dived in at the corner. Sweeney's conversion dropped just short of the uprights. The score now 10 points to 6 in Parks favour. Bowling hit back with a try but they too missed the extra two. This making for a very intense last 8 or so minutes. Park continued to push and it was Bowling who then gave away a couple of penalties allowing Park to gain easy yards. The passing became frantic but did allow for Park to produce an opening for Manger to come up with the winning try. Sweeney missed the difficult kick which helped Bowling to keep their heads up and hit back to attempt to score in the top corner, only for a massive defensive effort by Theo Tooth, Ryan Sweeney and James Gill to take the Bowling player out and over the corner flag. The referee blowing up for the final whistle. This was Parks third time at the finals and again they were bringing silverware back to Halifax.
A fantastic game of Rugby League played by two great sides, a credit to their coaches and supporters!

Game 21

Sunday 28th March

King Cross Park 32 - Moldgreen 6

King Cross Park U14's played away to Moldgreen, their second time of meeting in as many weeks. Park won the first encounter 56 points to nil. In this second encounter Park comfronted a much improved Huddersfield side, who never gave in up to the last minute.
Shohaib Mahmood playing centre for the first this season, went over for the first try of the game after some good handling from his team mates. Joshua MacDonald's long range attempt at goal was blown wide of the posts.
Mahmood went over for his second after some good go forward work from Man of the Match Daniel Hoyle and Theo Tooth, Moldgreen struggled to defend against their upper body strength. Again the kick blew wide.
Some good handling put speedy Richard Partington through to race to the line, only for a good tackle which stopped Partington from scoring. Partington kept his cool and played the ball quickly for the ball to be passed more central which created space for MacDonald to score his first of three. MacDonald also beat the weather and slotted over the extras.
The home side hit back with a long range try just before MacDonald touched down for his second, MacDonald gave the kicking tee to much improved Tyler Balmforth to slott over the conversion but again the wind took a hold of it.
In the second half Mahmood completed his hatrick showing to pass and then outsprinting the home defence. Again the the kick was missed.
MacDonald scored again with a clever weaving run to the line, knowing he had support at either side but with the determination to complete his hattrick, again the kick was missed.
Good defence kept Moldgreen at bay, Balmforth having his best game and top tackler Isaac Pollard both lead by example and winger Callum Gomes also made a personal best in the tackle count. Defence turned to attack one last time, Centre Jake Farrel turned his running line and hit the gap well, breaking the line of defence and placing the ball under the posts to give him the opportunity to complete the final score at 32 points to 6.

Game 20

Sunday 21st March 2010

King Cross Park 34 - West Bowling 10

King Cross Park U14's played their last home fixture for this season against West Bowling.

Bowling started the game better than Park, scoring the first six points after Park conceeded an early penalty.
But after some heavy pressure and strong defence led by Luke Stocks and Man of the Match Daniel Hoyle, Park hit back. Good handling gave space for Aron Manger to go over to equal the scores, Ryan Sweeney adding the goal.
Manger was soon over the try line again showing his pace and busting the line, this time the conversion was missed.
Park continued the pressure and much improved Shohaib Mahmood went over for Parks third try. A good switch back inside and Mahmood powered his way over. Sweeney kicked a great conversion to add the extra two.
Centre Jacob Farrell made plenty of ground throughout the game and was rewarded for his efforts scoring in the corner after the restart, again the difficult conversion was missed this time by Joshua MacDonald with the ball dropping just short of the crossbar.
Aron Manger bagged his hatrick of tries playing wide and finishing off some great handling by Ben Hildred who continued to come into the line well. The kick was 2 metres short of the touch but MacDonald managed to kick it straight through the uprights.
Manger continued to cause trouble, this time with the help of MacDonald who could of possibly scored the try himself but knowing Manger was in a better position, MacDonald slipped the ball out of the back for Manger to dive in at the corner. Unfortunately the conversion was this time missed.
Bowling hit back with a try of their own but only after Park, who had defended strongly, seemed to tire for a short time and leave space for them to break through.
Strong tackler Isaac Pollard had the last say and barged his way through for the last points of the game finishing off a great result for the home side.

Halifax Cup Semi Final
Elland 16 - King CrossPark 32

King Cross Park U14's and Elland U14's met for the 4th time this season in the semi-final of the Halifax Cup. Both defences started strong with top tackler Jacob Farrell and hooker Daniel Cockroft working hard for Park, and Liam Whiting for Elland. It was Josh MacDonald who found a weakness in the Ellland line. Park were using the ball well for MacDonald to receive the ball wide, stepping through to score. Ryan Sweeney's attempt at goal fell the wrong side of the upright. Shohaib Mahmood was the next to score. This time MacDonald was the provider who again broke the line with only the fullback to beat. Mahmood was quick to make a 2 on 1 attack. MacDonald timed the pass well and Mahmood sprinted for the line. Again the conversion proving difficult for Sweeney. Mahmood was on fire giving a fine pass himself for Isaac Pollard to break through only to be tackled by the cover defence. Pollard played the ball quickly for Mahmood to again race to the line, this time nearer to the post for Sweeney to kick his first successful conversion. Elland's Zak Thomson showed his pace scoring their first points. Park replied and good work by captain Luke Stocks led his pack forward for second rower Aron Manger to show a clean pair of heels and sprint under the posts. Sweeney again adding the 2 points. Farrell was rewarded for his effort in defence when the ball was passed from one side to his and the centre ran a good line to score near the post. Sweeney taking the kick before leaving the field. Thomson for Elland hit back with 2 further tries only for Park to complete the scoring with Man Of The Match Stocks, after Richard Partington made good yards, the ball then passed back midfield for Stocks to power through. Sunday 14th February
West Riding Challenge Cup Semi-Final
King Cross Park 28 - Siddal 6

Back in November King Cross Park U14's were beaten semi finalists by two points against Dewsbury Moor in the Yorkshire cup. They were unlucky a fortnight ago just losing out to Bold Miners from St Helens in the National cup, the Lanchishire champions won the game in the last five minutes leaving the final score 16 points to 19. Before Christmas Siddal gave Park a beating in the league, these results hurt, but team spirit stayed with them and the boys trained hard.
It was Siddal again at the weekend, this time in the Semi final of the West Riding challenge cup, both teams wanting to make amends for the losses the previous weeks and earn themselves a place in the final.
The first fifteen minutes was all defence with both teams putting in some strong tackles, Parks' Callum Gomes and Daniel Cockroft showing how to tackle the big boy's. Mistakes were made and tries went begging.
Park were the first to take control and continued throughout the rest of the game. Siddal knocked on 30 yards from their own line, stand off Joshua MacDonald received the ball from the scrum used his decoy runners well, showed to pass and a gap suddenly appeared for him to race through to score the first try. Sweeney slotted over a fine kick to make it six nil.
Park defended the next set of six well the ball was turned over in their own half, Isaac Pollard and Daniel Hoyle both showed improvement with their foot work which allowed them to make easy yards towards Siddals half. Much improved Shohiab Mahmood then stepped up, making a good pass to Man of the Match Aron Manger who brushed off a tackler and out ran the cover defence to score behind the posts, Sweeney again kicking the conversion making it 12points to nil at the break.
The first score of the second half came after good ground work from the home side and it was captain Luke Stocks who was having another fine game using his strength to take three defenders over the line with him, Sweeney this time unlucky with the kick. There was a buzz amongst the team now. Siddal tried to throw everything at Park but with both centres Jacob Farrell and Richard Partington showing determination in their tackles the defence stood strong and the team were soon rewarded with another try, this time Ben Hildred showing much improvement under the high ball collected a kick, raced forward to the tackle and quickly played the ball, which was then passed out to Manger who again sped towards the retreating defence, Manger broke the line and out-ran the fullback to score under the posts. Sweeney making it 22 points to nil.
The next try was a team effort with some fine handling skills with decoy runners coming through and creating space for the final pass to reach Mahmood who raced to the corner, leaving a difficult conversion for Sweeney who managed to slot it through the post with ease.
Siddal managed to score a consolation try with their man of the match Cannan Smithies squeezing in from acting half, the goal was kicked making the final score 28 points to 6 and it was King Cross Park who now need to prepare for a great day out on April 11th where they meet Bradford outfit West Bowling in the final.

Game 16
Sunday 07 February 2010
National Cup 2nd round
king Cross Park 16 Bold Miners 19

King Cross Park played host to Bold Miners of St Helens in the 2nd round of the National cup. Park defended the first five tackles well only to be let down by a kick and a bad bounce that fooled their fullback and wing with the ball bouncing back into the arms of the following attack, Miners responded well and finshed the first set with a converted try. Not the start Park wanted but this gave them a wake up call. A good kick restart followed by a knock on and suddenly Park were on the attack. After two good drives by Isaac Pollard and Jacob Farrel the ball was passed to Ryan Sweeney who then passed again to Pollard who passed at the line to support runner Aron Manger who darted over for Parks first points, Sweeney added the extra two, 6 points each. In the next four sets both side had their chances only for bad decision making and simple errors that prevented them from scoring, it was a while before the next score and then the visitors knocked on, Shohaib Mahmood and Luke Stocks made two good drives as did Joshua MacDonald who was caught meters from the line only to pop the ball out of the back to support runner Daniel Hoyle who would have scored had it not been for a fantastic tackle short of the line, quick thinking by hooker Daniel Cockroft allowed him to dive from half back to score his second try of the competition, Sweeney again converted making it 12 points to 6 Macdonald caught the ball from the restart and fed it to Theo Tooth who managed to drive the ball 25m up feild, Jake Farrell was equal to the task only to be penalised for moving off the mark. The visitors then pushed hard to find the try line, Park again defended well only to let in another try from another kick. the conversion was missed leaving the half time score 12 points to 10 in favour of the home side.
Park started the second half well, Mahmood running strong and the ball again going through the hands, when a gap opened up for Manger to dash down the touch line only for a fantastic tackle to deny him his second. Minors hit back but determined tackling lead by Richard Partington closed the visitors down only for them to score another converted try again from a kick. The score now at 12 points to 14, Park defended well again this time fullback Ben Hildred cleaned up the kick and gained 10metres with a quick play the ball Theo Tooth again stepped in to brush off the tackles to sprint 50metres down the field. The visitors were penalised for offside Hoyle headed for the posts and with another quick play the ball, the ball was fed out to MacDonald who stepped through to score what could off been the winning try, only for Miners to squeeze over for one of their own and then to add a drop goal before the final whistle leaving the final score 16 points to 19 to the Lancashire Champions.
A fantastic game of rugby league by all.

National Cup Round 1
King Cross Park 44 -Elland 0

King Cross Park U14's played host to local team Elland in the first round of the National cup. After six weeks without a game Park seemed a bit rusty and Elland looked the more likely to be the first to score. Park defended well though and soon lifted their game and began to pile on the points keeping the opposition from appearing on the score board.
Isaac Pollard was the first to score using his direct running. Aron Manger playing his first game at loose forward out ran the cover defence for try number two. Pollard powered his way over again for his second and substitute Theo Tooth came on for his best performance to score after a fantastic build up with the ball going through eleven pairs of hands, Tooth straightend up to score near the posts. Man of the Match Joshua MacDonald finished the point scoring for the first half leaving the score 26 nil at the break.
In the second half Park continued to play as they did in the first with good support play which lead to three further tries. Much improved Shohaib Mahmood scored the first of the half, Pollard crashed over again for his much deserved hatrick. Jacob Farrell who had to be patient after missing out a couple of times earlier in the game went over for the last try of the game. Goal kicker Ryan Sweeney was on top form slotting over 6 out of the 8 conversions. Final score King Cross Park 44 - Elland 0.

West Riding Cup
Meltham 10 - King Cross Park 28

King Cross Park Under 14's went through to the next round of the West Riding Challenge Cup after beating Meltham All Blacks 28 points to 10. After a couple of disappointing weeks Park got back to their usual selves being solid in defence and skillful in attack. Centres Richard Partington and Jacob Farrell were outstanding and halfbacks Ben Hildred and Ryan Sweeney played their best games of the season. The forwards also played well for each other with Isaac Pollard, James Gill and Luke Stocks all having high tackle counts. Dan Hoyle, Theo Tooth and Aron Manger all ran the ball well.
Farrell was the first to score out wide after good handling by his team mates, who created space for him to speed over. Sweeney was unlucky with the difficult conversion. The second try came from Josh MacDonald, playing at hooker for the first time. Again good ground was made by the forwards which forced Meltham to back pedal. MacDonald was quick from dummy half and managed to dart over to score. Sweeney added the extra points. Substitute Shohaib Mahmood came onto the pitch with the attitude to do well for the team, running strong and finishing off a good try again after some good handling. Sweeney with a similar kick to his first, this time produced a fantastic effort to make it 16-0 at the break.
In the second half Meltham came strong pinning Park in their own half for some time. A mistake was made and Meltham squeezed over in the corner. Mahmood received the ball from the kick off and brought the ball back to the 20 metre. Daniel Hoyle made another good drive for Mahmood to charge it again, this time passing to Luke Stocks who, with quick hands passed it to loose forward Pollard who stepped and sprinted to dive under the posts. Sweeney converted after an excellant try. Mahmood was then rewarded for his efforts, scoring his brace running wide and then back under the posts. Again Sweeney kicking the 2. Meltham finished the game with a consolation try.
A return to form for the King Cross boys - keep it up guys!

Game 13
Sunday 6th December
League Fixture
King Cross Park 4 Siddal 36

King Cross Park played host to neighbours Siddal. It had been a full season after the two teams last met, with Siddal being relegated into division 1.
Since then they have recruited well and with some excellent coaching from Gareth Greenwood have become a very strong outfit.
Both teams were equal in the first half with Siddal up by 6 points to 4.
Unfortunatly before and just after the half time whistle Park lost some key players through injury and illness.
Daniel Cockroft (concusion) Josh MacDonald, Aron Manger and James Gill (all flu)
Isaac Pollard and Tyler Balmforth (both head).
This hurt the team badly and they were soon under the pressure of the tidle wave of attack from the visitors.
Taking nothing away from a much improved side but a few vital errors from the ref soon gave Siddal plenty of ball and territory and the trys flooded in.
Park will take this onto the training field and like any good team will put the wrong things write.

Awards
Man of the match - Ryan Sweeney
1st runner up - Daniel Hoyle
2nd runner up - Shohaib Mahmood

Yorkshire Cup Semi Final
Dewsbury Moor 22 v King Cross Park 20

King Cross Park U14's bowed out of the Yorkshire Cup at the final hurdle when they lost against Dewsbury Moor by the smallest of margins of 22-20. Park started the better of the two teams and finished the game on the front only to let themselves down mid way of the game.
Josh MacDonald was first to score after Ryan Sweeney made a crossfield kick. Centre MacDonald leapt high for the ball beating the Dewsbury Moor winger in the air to turn and dive over the line. Sweeney was close with the 2 points which drifted the wrong side of the post.
Top Tackler Jake farrell was next to score when Daniel Hoyle drove the ball forward to create an offload to MacDonald who ran wide, straightened up and passed the ball back inside to support runner Farrell who pushed off the fullback to sprint under the posts. This time Sweeney added the extra 2 points.
Dewsbury hit back with some strong defence. Park unfortunately lost a couple of strong players and fell off the boil to allow Moor back into the game, scoring two converted tries leaving the score 12-10 at the half time break.
Moor were quick to score again in the second half and Park began to struggle. Captain Luke Stocks then gave them hope after he ran strong onto a well timed pass from scrum half Ben Hildred, again the kick too difficult for Sweeney. Moor hit back with another converted try. This seemed to wake Park up and on came Isaac Pollard who made good ground as did Farrell and Aron Manger. Theo Tooth having his best game of the season gained good ground with the ball then shifted through the hands for MacDonald to step his way through for a try to allow Sweeney to kick them within 2 points. Park received the ball from the kick off only for the referee to blow for full time. Park were beaten but earned great respect from their opposition and supporters.

GAME 11

SUNDAY 22ND NOVEMBER

KING CROSS PARK 30 MELTHAM ALL BLACKS 10

King Cross Park Under 14's played host to Meltham All Blacks at the weekend. This was the second time the two sides had met already this season with Park being the successors the first time round. Park took an early lead through Aron Manger who started the game at loose forward. Good yards were made by the forwards and a clever ball out to Manger, who stepped his way around the outside centre to score wide of the post. Josh MacDonald with a good kick made it 6 points to nil. Strong running Daniel Hoyle was the next to score after MacDonald and Ben Hildred linked well together, Hoyle slammed onto the ball and powered his way over. Ryan Sweeney came onto the field to add the two points. Jacob Farrell was very strong in defence and forced an error from the kick off. Park were once again pushing towards Melthams line and it was Farrell who darted to the line squeezing through two tacklers to score. Another good kick by Sweeney making the half time score 18 points to nil.
In the second half Meltham lifted their heads and pulled back with ten points of their own. Aron Manger decided to show a little magic of his own and weaved his way through to score under the posts. Sweeney made no mistake with his early conversion. The final try of the game came five minutes from the end. Fullback Kieran Nicholl fielded a kick well, bringing it away from the posts. Theo Tooth and Top Tackler Isaac Pollard ran the ball well back into Melthams half. Daniel Hoyle made a half break only to be brought down short of the line. The ball was then shipped out to MacDonald who showed to pass but dummied his way through scoring with ease. Sweeney again managing a 100% record with his kicks. Leaving the score 30-10 in favour of the home side, giving them confidence going into the semi-final of the Yorkshire Cup next week.

Game 10

Sunday 15th November

Castleford Lock Lane 24 King Cross Park 32

King Cross travelled to Castleford Lock Lane at the weekend to compete for a place in the Yorkshire Cup Semi-final. Lane started the scoring from a clever kick and chase early in their first set. Park re-started the game and kept their hosts within their own half. The ball was kicked deep but this time Callum Gomes was equal to the task catching on the full and bringing it back to the half way mark. Luke Stocks, Theo tooth and James Gill ran the ball closer to the sticks. With a quick play the ball and good hands from Daniel Cockroft to scrum half Ryan Sweeney who dummied one player to pass wide to Josh MacDonald. MacDonald came onto the ball well enough to brush off two tacklers, step the fullback and dive over for Parks first try. Sweeney converted the extra two points.

A very well drilled Lock Lane pushed forward with the ball coming close to score but good pressure forced them to make mistakes. Park hit back again, Sweeney and MacDonald again using the ball well to put strong running Jacob Farrell over for a well deserved try. Sweeney missed the difficult kick.
The Castleford side hit back with a try of their own, but before the half time whistle Shohaib Mahmood came on and lifted the side and was rewarded with a try of his own. Sweeney unfortunately missed the conversion leaving the score at the break 10 points to 14.
In the second half Park were quick to score with Aron Manger linking well into the line, with a good hand off and quick feet Manger beat the defence to go over near the posts. An easier conversion for Sweeney to kick. For the next ten minutes it was all Lock Lane who went over for two more unconverted tries, closing the gap by four points. Park looked tired and beaten, but their heads lifted when Manger showed a clean pair of heels and scored a long range try, Sweeney converting.
Lane wouldn't lie down and hit back with what looked to be an error by the ref who gave a try that looked short of the line. Again the points gap being just four. Park needed to dig deep. Good work in defence by Top Tackler Isaac Pollard, Daniel Hoyle and Richard Partington forced an error. Park reacted well and drove forward close to the line. Daniel Cockroft worked well at dummy half, a short pass to strong runner Daniel Hoyle, who barged his way over for the final try of the game. The celebrations started early, even before Sweeney had time to put over the final points for the referee to blow the whistle. Park now march on into the Semi-final of the Yorkshire Cup. Game 9
Sunday 8th November 2009
Elland 14 - King Cross Park 30

King Cross Park faced Elland in the League for the second time already this season. This time Elland had the home advantage and started the game with confidence forcing an early penalty in front of Parks posts to take an early 2 point lead.
Park realised they were in a game and picked up the enthusiasm scoring 3 tries to nil before the half time break. Man of the Match Isaac Pollard was the first to score with a well timed pass from Ben Hildred. Pollard ran onto the ball at pace and powered through Ellands defence to touch down. Half back Ryan Sweeney added the conversion. Pollard was unstoppable and was soon over the try line for his second, again his pace and strength proving too much for the Elland defence. Sweeney again successful with the conversion. The game tightened up some and there was no score for some time, both sides tackling well. Luke Stocks lead by example with his running game, but topped the tackle count with his desire to win. It was a matter of time but one of the teams had to break. Theo Tooth came off the bench with an impact running his lines well and was soon rewarded a try under the posts. Making the half time score 2 - 18 in Parks favour.
In the second half Elland fought back scoring two tries of their own, but Park hit back with another two tries of their own. Shohaib Mahmood with the first. Some good passages from the visitors put Elland on the back foot and under pressure to brush away a couple of defenders and dart for the line. Fullback Aron Manger topped off a good performance with a similar try of his own. Manger now scoring in all of his 8 games. Sweeney with a 100% record slotted over the extras.

Game 8

Sunday 1st November 2009

3rd Round Yorkshire Cup

Stanningley 6 - King Cross Park 38

King Cross Park U14’s reached the quarter finals of the Yorkshire cup at the weekend after convincingly beating Stanningley on their own turf. Park travelled over to Leeds not knowing if the game was going ahead after the down pour we had during the early hours. A decision was made to play but the game had to be played on one of their poorer pitches which was on the small and which quickly turned into a mud bath. Fortunately Park adapted to the conditions well and soon went over for their first try, Isaac Pollard who missed last weeks game, made up with a vengeance and powered his way through to score a fine try. Ryan Sweeney, also missing last week, slotted over the extra two points.

Stanningley hit back with a converted try of their own, and should have taken advantage of the sloping pitch to score more. A strong defence denied them anymore points, lead by top tackler Luke Stocks and Daniel Hoyle. Joshua MacDonald playing after not long getting off the plane from a two week Canada tour went over for his first try of three, unfortunately for Sweeney a strong gust of wind held the kick up short of the crossbar. James Gill tackled well for the team but had to leave the field through injury, this allowed Theo Tooth to show his ability to drive the ball forward gaining good yards which put the team in a good position to score again before the break, MacDonald weaving his way through near the post for his second. Sweeney with an easier kick made the score at half time, 16 points to 6 in favour of the visitors.

In the second half all that was needed was the continuation of the strong defence shown in the first half. Centres Richard Partington and Jake Farrell and wingers Callum Gomes and Keiran Nicholl didn’t see much of the ball due to the bad conditions but still defended and cleaned up any kicks that came their way well. It wasn’t long before Park scored their first of the half, this time it was a bit of individual brilliance from fullback Aron Manger who sprinted almost full length of the field after a mistake by the home side. The ball being placed under the post making the extra two points easier for Sweeney. Isaac Pollard was brought from the field for a well earned rest but not before scoring his brace of tries this one being probably one of his best touchdowns as yet scored. Sweeney again making the kicking role look easy. MacDonald scored his hat trick after Tyler Balmforth put in a blockbusting tackle, the opposition failed to respect the ball, Liam Johnstone reacted well after he picked up the loose ball and ran 20m. The ball was passed out wide to MacDonald who with one hand placed the ball over the line. Ben Hildred was moved to scrum half and used his handling skills to create gaps for his forwards but also for himself, where he made ground down the middle. Again the ball was passed to the left to strong runner Shohaib Mahmood who showed his strength to fend off the tackles and then sprint under the posts, Sweeney slotted over the final points of the game.

GAME 7

SUNDAY 25TH OCT

WEST BOWLING 14 KING CROSS PARK 10

King Cross Park U14's were away to West Bowling at the weekend, knowing that they had a hard task ahead of them. Bowling are flying high at the start of the season with three wins from four, with Park only having played two. Park were also without several key players due to holidays and sickness, but the boys who turned out on the day did themselves proud with a great defensive effort lead by top tackler James Gill and man of the match Daniel Hoyle.
Bowling scored early in the game and with the odds against them it looked like a whitewash was on the cards for King Cross. This was not to be, even with the wind and rain in their face Park defended their own line with all their might, this tired the team and Bowling went over only once more before the break.
In the second half Park used the weather to their advantage and with a good kick from Theo Tooth, the home side were put under pressure. Jake Farrell reacted quickly to a mistake, picked up the loose ball and scored wide of the posts. Shohaib Mahmood took the kicking role and slotted over the conversion.
Bowling scored a try of their own with a great individual effort from the centre to put the score at 14pts to 6. Park never gave in and kept their heads up. Tyler Balmforth filling in at hooker, got the pack moving forward. Another good kick over and again Farrell lept on a mistake, the ball was driven back towards the posts close enough for captain Luke stocks to power his way over, the kick was missed but there was a belief within the team and again they pounded the Bowling line only to be denied by the final whistle. Park lost their first points of the season but not their dignity.

GAME 6
2nd Round Yorkshire Cup
Sunday 18th October
King Cross Park 32 - Hull Dockers 20

King Cross Park Under 14's played host to Hull Dockers at the weekend in the 2nd round of the Yorkshire Cup. Park got off to a flying start when half back Ryan Sweeney caught the ball from from the kick off. Laying it onto prop Luke Stocks who quickly gained 20 metres. Daniel Hoyle ran another equally powerful drive, as did loose forward Isaac Pollard. These good drives laid down a good platform for the half backs Sweeney and Ben Hildred to combine and send Aron Manger in for the first of his two tries. Sweeney added the conversion. Park kept the pressure on and were soon back in the Dockers half following some demonic tackling from Pollard, Hoyle and Richard Partington. Good hands again, this time Aron Manger ran the decoy which pulled the defence in away from touch, allowing space on the outside for Jacob Farrell to score out wide, again the conversion was successful. The Hull side showed some good handling and were unlucky not to score. A good defensive effort from Liam Johnstone, Farrell and Manger forcing the tackle into touch. Hooker Daniel Cockroft rallied his forwards back down the field. Farrell stepped his was through to the line for his second after using good feet and a strong hand off. Sweeney unlucky with the conversion. Again the Dockers came back showing that they could play good rugby pushing towards Parks line. Trying to shift the ball from right to left through several pairs of hands. Farrell stepped up for his third with a well timed interception to sprint the full length of the field, again another converted. That try would normally have finished an opposition team off, but not the Humbersiders who came back to score just before the break. This lifted their enthusiasm and in the second half they came back into the game pushing hard. Park having to take the pressure for 15 minutes, which encouraged the tackling skills of James Gill, Kieran Nicholl, Theo Tooth, Pollard and Hoyle. The Hull side managed to claw their way back. Park tried to hit back with Shohaib Mahmood, not playing his normal game but as a ball player. This worked for the team when he threw a long perfect ball out to winger Callum Gomes who took the ball; well to score in the corner. Only for the referee to rule it as a forward pass. Things weren't going right for the home side until the team Captain Stocks showed the way with a great individual try, successfully converted by Sweeney. Hull hit back, unfortunately Park couldn't hold them out -allowing them to score a converted try bringing the scoreline closer. Manger, again scored in the closing minutes, unfortunately no conversion bringing the final score 32 - 20 taking King Cross Park through to the next round of the Yorkshire Cup against Stanningley.

GAME 5
Sunday 3rd October
Meltham  - 16
King Cross Park - 36
This Sunday King Cross Park travelled over to Meltham for an early kick off so they were able to travel over to Warrington to support Halifax in their final. The early start showed and Cross struggled to find their form. Isaac Pollard and Daniel Hoyle came close to scoring but a desperate defence held them back. But the home defence could not hold their line for much longer and Man of the Match Aron Manger spotted a gap to score his first of three tries. Ryan Sweeney eased over the conversion. Sweeney's kick from the restart was failed to gather in by Meltham receivers and Park soon capitalised. When the ball was thrown wide Josh MacDonald ran onto a well timed pass to score right of the posts, again Sweeney added the extras. Meltham worked hard and pulled themselves back into the game with a converted try of their own. Just before the half time break Manger shot from the scrum, beat the outside backs to make the score 6 points to 18 in Parks favour. In the second half Meltham came down the hill using the slop to their advantage, scoring 2 quick tries, one of which was converted. Park had to dig deep and improve the defensive effort, which they did with Top Tackler Shohaib Mahmood leading the way. Daniel Hoyle was having his best game of the season also. Hooker Daniel Cockroft kept things tight around the ruck. Confidence was regained and MacDonald went over for his second, weaving his way through to score under the posts. Sweeney again added the easy conversion. Manger showed his speed again, beating the first line of defence in his own half, taking the fullback on around the outside and then scoring under the posts. Sweeney was again successful with the kick. Meltham tried to fight back, getting close to the try line on a couple of occasions but failed to score. Callum Gomes received the Coaches Award after showing good confidence cleaning up any kicks that came his way. With 2 minutes remaining Kieran Nicholl also fielded a high kick, his first defender Richard Partington scooped from acting half offloadfing to Mahmood who was tackled 15metres from the try line. Luke Stocks stood up and powered his way over in the corner, Sweeney able to kick 6 out of 6. Final score Meltham 16 - King Cross Park 36.

GAME 4

20TH SEP

King Cross Park V Elland

Final Score 24pts to 14

King Cross Park U14’s played host to neighbours Elland at the weekend. This was Parks first league game of the season but Ellands third so Park needed to apply the pressure early in the game, which they did forcing an error from the kick off. From the scrum they drove to the sticks and then back to the right, on the third tackle Theo Tooth ran onto a well timed pass to score five metres from the touch. Ryan Sweeney’s kick dropped just short of the cross bar. Park failed to keep up the pressure with mistakes being made early in their next two sets. But good defence kept Elland in their own half. Park pushed forward and space opened up on the right for Shohaib Mahmood to score, again Sweeney was unlucky with the kick. Park let themselves down with forced errors and failed to complete four sets, but again Elland could not break the line. Aron Manger scored the first of his two tries after good hands which gave him the opportunity to brush off a couple of tacklers and sprint clear to score the final try of the half. Sweeney making the score 14pts to nil at half time with his first successful kick.

In the second half Park started as strong as they did first, they defended as a team and drove their opponents back. Elland kicked over early for fullback Keiran Nicholl to catch the ball on the full and then to beat the first two defenders, a quick play the ball and a good strong drive back to the middle of the field by captain Luke Stocks, allowed halfbacks Ben Hildred and Sweeney to combine together to create an attacking opportunity for centre Josh MacDonald who showed the ball to pass but straightened up and sprinted 50 metres to score. Sweeney failed with the conversion.

Man of the Match Isaac Pollard and fellow forward Daniel Hoyle ran some good lines around the ruck with Hoyle being unfortunate not to score after being deemed to have been held up over the line.

Park began to step off the gas for a while, which allowed Elland to score a converted try. Elland restarted the game with the kick which was driven back to the middle of the pitch, the ball was played and then passed to new signing Aron Manger who set off for the try of the game leaving all his ex-team mates behind him to put the ball down under the posts. Sweeney placed the ball over the cross bar with ease.

The game was virtually over but just enough time for Elland to score two more unconverted tries, the last one being scored in the last seconds of the game leaving the final score in favour of the home team 24pts to 14.

After a good start and a convincing lead the team was shuffled around, allowing players to play other positions. Some players handled this well but the team lost their shape and allowed Clayton to score four unconverted tries. But the final score at 20 - 56 was still convincing. Park showed progression and a lot of positive rugby, running good lines and working well together in defence as well as attack. Man of the Match Isaac Pollard lead the way in defence and was rewarded with a try. Daniel Hoyle, Ben Hildred and Luke Stocks were also strong in defence. Stocks managing also to score his first hat-trick. Jacob Farrell ran his lines well scoring two tries from them.
