The Under 8's will be coached by Michael Hellowell again this season.

15th August 2009

King Cross Park Emerging 8's and under 8's were away on Saturday at the Keighley Albion Fun Day. The Emerging 8's Kicked off proceedings in wet and windy conditions with a thrilling 32-32 draw against a spirited Guisley Rangers side. Two early trys by Guisley immediately put KXP on the back foot and Park were lucky not to go three down when the referee ruled out a guisley try for failing to ground the ball correctly. This spurred Park into life and George Gledhill showed great pace to round the Guisley defence only to knock on with the line at his mercy. Undeterred the Park forwards soldiered on with Lewis Scott, Niall Green and Finn Ferguson grinding out the hard yards, allowing Luke Latham the space to race clear from half way for park's opening score. Guisley replied with a score of their own before Park reduced the deficit when Latham once again showed great power and pace to score in the corner. Guisley hit back with a couple of trys of their own despite the defensive efforts of Lennon Partington, Emerson Bradwell and Edward Chippendale. On the stroke of half-time Gledhill made amends for his earlier error by scoring a scintillating try, using outstanding pace and evasive running to beat most of the Guisley team before grounding the ball with a textbook dive. Despite trailing Guisley 20-12 Park started the second half in top gear and took the lead courtesy of trys from Bradwell, Gledhill and Chippendale, Guisley replied with a try of their own before Latham once again put Park ahead with a trademark burst of speed from halfway, not to be outdone Guisley hit back again to level the scores. With only minutes remaining Park appeared to have snatched victory when in only his second game of Rugby League George Gledhill displayed the pace and elusiveness that had caused Guisley problems throughout the game to complete his hat-trick and score what looked to be the winning try. However with the last play of the game Guisley had other ideas and scored a well deserved try and levelled the scores at 32-32.

In their second game King Cross Park Emerging 8's ran out 32-20 winners against a strong Keighley Albion side. Throughout the game Park showed tremendous effort in defence and did extremely well to restrict the Keighley side to just five scores on such a large field of play. The direct running of Edward Chippendale caused problems all morning and he put Park ahead with the first score of the game. Park went further ahead with a Luke Latham try before Keighley scored their first of the game. Keighley went on to level the scores before Chippendale once again put park ahead with his second try. Keighley again levelled the scores at 12-12 and actually went ahead after Park coughed up possession on their own line and gifted a try to their opponents. On the stroke of half time Park levelled the scores at 16-16 when Chippendale used his pace to completed his hat-trick. In the second half Park showed their pace and power to score four trys courtesy of two for Chippendale and two for man of the moment George Gledhill. In reply Keighley could only score one second half try, however the second half was far from one sided, Park had to pull off a number of try saving tackles and spent long periods defending their own line with outstanding efforts from Lewis Scott, Lennon Partington and Niall Green.

King Cross Park Under 8's suffered a 40-24 defeat to a tough Keighley Albion side. Park started brightly with strong hard running from Liam Midgley, Ben Hellowell and Aarron Brook, however park were unable to capitalise on their territorial advantage and conceded two early long range tries. Despite struggling defensively, the Park team were all enthusiastic with the ball in hand and their efforts paid off when Ben Burrows dived over in the corner for their opening score after a strong run from Harrison Barker. Park's second came soon after when Joe Stott broke the line and stepped inside a covering defender to score. The quick back line of Keighley was still causing problems for Park and they continued to leak tries out wide but Park refused to give up and got themselves back into the game when Ben Burrows crossed for his second and third tries of the game. As the second half progressed Park continued to run hard but failed to use the width of the pitch and the tough defensive line of Keighley held firm until Rourke Woolley hit the ball at pace and carried three defenders over the line with him to score. Park continued to play with their hearts rather than their heads but were rewarded late in the game when Woolley stepped through the Keighley line for his second try.

Sunday 5th July

King Cross Under 8’s were this week away at Hunslet Warriors Festival of Rugby, which was attended by teams from all around West Yorkshire.

The first game was against a well organized host team and KXP showed their intentions immediately with strong runs from Tyler Brook and Bailey Durkin, and with Rourke Woolley being held up over the line on the last tackle .Hunslet replied with strong runs of their own,but were met by a strong line of defence lead by Joe Stott and Aaron Brook . The game was going end to end, with Hunslet able to squeeze over the try line twice on the last tackle, before Ben Burrows ran half the length of the pitch beating several defenders to score in the corner. Park defended like Trojans with Ben Hellowell and Cameron Brook pulling off several telling tackles, and they thought they had kept their defence in tact for the full set of six but when the Hunslet player dropped the ball on the last tackle , Rourke Woolley picked the loose ball up and was instantly bundled into touch , which in everyones eyes except the referee’s was a turn over , resulted in another set of six to the Warriors. This lead to a try to Hunslet on the last tackle as Harrison Barker, James Crook and Aaron Brook tried in vain to stop the ball from being grounded. Park hit back before the stroke of half time , with Ben Burrows repeating his efforts to score wide out making the half time scores 12-8 to Hunslet. The second half started with both teams trying to exert pressure on the other teams try line with Harrison Barker and Tyler Brook both going close , before Hunslet scored in the corner with a great solo try from their number 6 , who was proving to be a real danger everytime he touched the ball. Again KXP hit back with Joe Stott showing his skills to dance over in the far corner , much to the delight of the traveling supporters.

Hunslet kept throwing everything at the KXP try line , with Rourke Woolley , Ben Hellowell and Aaron Brook making try saving tackles , but as the minutes ticked away ,Hunslet managed to cross over for 3 unanswered tries making the final score 28-12 to Hunslet Warriors , which did not really reflect the overall game .

The second game of the festival was against Leeds team Beeston Broncos, who were up against a determined KXP side , who raced into a 12-0 lead with two individual tries from Rourke Woolley and a cheeky try on the last tackle from Ben Hellowell.Beeston were struggling to contain the strong runs from Joe Stott and Ben Burrows , and they failed to make any impact through the defence of Park with Aaron and Cameron Brook leading the way  . As the game went on, the Beeston players were finding it hard to play on the hard surface and with the injury time longer than actual playing time, the Beeston coach called time on the game on the result stayed at 12-0 to KXP

The final game was against local rivals Queensbury and Park hit the game at full speed with Joe Stott and Ben Burrows, diving over for tries after good work from James Crook ,Bailey Durkin and Cameron Brook. Queensbury hit back with a strong powerful run, which lead to a try ,before KXP responded with Tyler Brook getting on the score sheet after Rourke Woolley, Harrison Barker  and Ben Hellowell had made good yards. Park extended their lead with Ben Burrows claiming his second of the game making the half time score 16-4 to KXP.

Queensbury replied in the second half with 2 quick tries after some tired tackling from Park, but  up popped Joe Stott with another try to edge KXP further ahead. Both side went close , but defences held out  , before Queensbury hit back twice to level the scores , and with the game just about to end , Tyler Brook made a dart for the Queensbury try line and as he was diving over , he was just held back from grounded the ball over the try line , with the final whistle going ,the game ended level at 20-20 , which on reflection was a fair result

Man of Festival – Ben Burrows

All the players enjoyed the Festival atmosphere and met Ronnie the Rhino and Luke Burgess with the Super League Grand Final Trophy

Sunday 14th June

The emerging 8’s were this week away at Guisley and started with a well earned victory over the home team. From the start KXP showed their desire to win with great tackling from Niall Green , Edward Chippendale and Bailey Durkin , with Lewis Scott and Conall Ferguson making good yardage when in attack. Both sets of defences were good to watch , but it was Guisley who were first to score , this spurred KXP on and Ben Hellowell was first to score diving over on the last tackle to level the score .Park then went ahead with Bailey Durkin scoring a long range try after beating several defenders, making the half time score 8-4 to Park.

With KXP playing down the hill in the second half , they exerted pressure on the home teams defence and Luke Latham was quick to find a gap and darted over for a try, this was soon followed by other try , this time from Aaron Brook who danced over for a great solo try. Park were now playing some entertaining rugby and they went further ahead after Finn Ferguson showed his speed and ran nearly the full length of the pitch down the left hand side touch line .Guisley refused to give in and were awarded a try on the last tackle from acting half . The fight back was short lived as KXP grabbed two identical tries , with Ben Hellowell providing the pass for Emerson Bradwell to dive over in the corner. On the last play of the game , Guilsey dived over again from short range on the last tackle making the scores 28-12 to King Cross Park

As the game came to ahead KXP players seemed to tire and Bowling ran in a further 3 tries making the final score 32-16 to West Bowling.

Keighley Albion vs KXP

The under 8’s arrived to play a curtain raiser against Keighley Albion before the Keighley Cougars v York ,only to be told the groundsman would not allow the game to be played for fear they would tear the pitch up !!!!!!!!!!.. However due to the traveling it was agreed the game should be played on the nearby Keighley Albion’s pitch.

Albion won the toss and elected to run the ball first and despite the strong tackling of Rourke Woolley , Cameron and Tyler  Brook , Albion squeezed over in the corner on the last tackle.KXP responded well with some good runs from Luke Latham and Niall Green to enable Ben Burrows to barge his way over to the level the scores. With both teams defending well it was not until 2 minutes before half time that KXP extended the lead with Rourke Woolley showing his speed to score in the corner after some good approach work from Aarron Brook and Ben Hellowell.

The second half started well for KXP as they extended their lead further with Liam Midgley bulldozing his way over despite the efforts of 3 Albion defenders . Albion started to turn up the pressure with some good off loads but the cover tacking of Tyler and Aaron Brook was outstanding and this enabled KXP to turn defence into attack with strong runs from Liam Midgley , Ben Burrows and Cameron Brook .With the clock ticking down Albion grabbed a life line with a try in the corner despite the good tackling from all the KXP players.KXP then showed their true spirit with Luke Latham , Ben Hellowell and Niall Green making hard yards against a much bigger opposition for Rourke Woolley to seal the victory with a fantastic try in the corner much to the delight of the large traveling support.

King Cross Park vs Meltham won 20-8

After a 2 week break, KXP showed no signs of their lack of match practice against Meltham this weekend at Standeven. Luke Latham the captain for the day won the toss and elected to run the ball first. As usual Liam Midgley drove the ball in well and was matched with the same effort from James Crook and Cameron Brook. KXP scored their 1st try of the game in the 1st set of six, with new comer Ben Burrows powering his way over to score in the corner despite the efforts of 2 or 3 defenders.

Now it was KXP turn to defend, with Ben Hellowell and Aaron Brook stopping anything that came towards them , unfortunately KXP couldn’t hold their concentration and Meltham managed to sneak over in the corner to level the scores up.Park responded well and with Tyler Brook and Emerson Bradwell making some strong runs against a bigger opposition ,this laid the platform for Rourke Woolley to score as he found a gap in the Meltham defence.Park extended their lead further with Niall Green and Luke Latham gaining valuable ground for Ben Burrows to claim his 2nd try of the game which was a mirror image of the 1st try.KXP went further ahead with James Crook crossing in the corner from a break from the half way line .KXP then had to defend for what seemed a long period of time on their own line ,with Liam Midgley, Ben Hellowell and Aaron Brook being in the thick of the action with latch ditch efforts to keep their line in tack. Finally the defence cracked on the stroke of half time making the scores 16-8 .The second half was dominated by defence with boths teams producing some great tackle with Rourke Woolley pulling some great one on one tackles ,as KXP tried to make their way up field Cameron Brook ,Emerson Bradwell and Niall Green all made valuable yards to enable Tyler Brook to run around the defence to score wide out making the final score 20-8 to KXP

Meltham vs King Cross Park 12-20

What a difference a week makes!, after a miserable start to the season last week, KXP Under 8’s this week were away to a big Meltham team and they got off to the best possible start with Rourke Woolley crossing over for KXP first time on only the 2nd drive of the game.Meltham replied with some strong drives down the slope , but were met by a sold line of defence with Cameron  and Aaron Brook producing some great tackles ,making the home team drop the ball several times. Liam Midgley and James Crook made valuable yards with some barnstorming runs up the slope to ease the pressure, but Meltham were the next to score in the top corner despite the cover tackling of Tyler Brook and Niall Green .KXP responded well with Liam Midgley and Luke Latham making some good runs ,which enabled Ben Hellowell to dart over on the 6th tackle .The game was going end to end with both defences on top and it wasn’t until the last minute of the half before another try was scored by Meltham , making the half time score 8-8.

The second half started well for KXP ,with all players eager to take their turn for a run and they were rewarded when Tyler Brook broke the line of defence to run half the length of the pitch to dive over in the corner .Meltham never gave up and they levelled the scores with a good try in the corner making the scores 12-12.

This spurred KXP on, and when a Meltham player was met by a 3 man tackle Ben Hellowell was the first to react and ran half the pitch to score wide out.

The last 5 minutes of the game was dominated by KXP and with the ball in hand Luke Latham, Cameron Brook and Niall Green eager for the ball and as always Aaron Brook and Rourke Woolley stopped any threat Meltham had to offer. With the clock ticking down KXP secured a well deserved victory with a great individual try by James Crook who outpaced the entire Meltham team to run down the touch line to score in the corner ,much to the delight of the traveling supporters making the final score 20-12 to King Cross Park.

The awards for the game could of gone to any of the 9 players, but were chosen as ,
